Did you know that a third of the UK population did not vote in the last general election?

We could assume that everything will remain the same whether or not we vote - But historic evidence tells us this is not the case!

We vote because we want those in power to share our ethos for a better society. We could leave that up to others. However, it is different perspectives that make democracy effective. Because without your voice, your values and priorities may never even be discussed let alone be used to safeguard your interests during the creation of new laws.

Many people are quick to level the accusation that any given democratic nation gets the governance that they deserve. It is certainly true that we often get the governance that others voted for and we didn't vote against!

If we ever lose our democracy, historical precedent suggests that it will almost certainly be through the democratic process itself!

Democracy is not about any one individual having disproportionate power. Even when we do not get the results we want, the system itself is working to keep us safe provided we are exercising our right to vote - and that we then go on to hold our representatives accountable.

At rate the state, we don't aim to influence who or what you choose to support. We only want to encourage UK citizens to consider whether not engaging in our democracy may be serving a small self-serving section of society at the expense of everybody else. We need your voice.

So, what reasons do we give for not voting?
